Parisian Jacque

About five years ago I lived in Paris for a semester of school and lived with a French family.

The 3 kids, my french ‘siblings’ had a pet fish and loved to eat chocolatey cereal or chocolate biscuits (cookies). They loved learn English words from me while they helped me with my French/ laughed at my incorrect verb conjugation.

They also were obsessed with the show 24. “Jacque Bauer!!” they couldn’t comprehend how I didn’t watch the show and insisted I watch with them. The only TV in the apartment was in their parents room and one night I was babysitting them/ hanging out – after making French versions of frozen pizza (tuna on one, and some white sauce on the other)- we turned on season 2 or 4 of 24.

Nothing is as funny as trying to keep up with a bunch of gasping french kids, shrieking as things happen while you’re about three minutes behind in understanding due to slow translation skills and a heavy reliance on context clues.

I never watched the show in the states even after my return, it just wasn’t the same without the dubbed voices and the feeling of sitting on worn, creaky, french floorboards at the foot of a bed.

Now that its back on TV, I wonder if they’re all freaking out and watching together…

Running A 5K In A Spandex Suite

Last fall my roommates and I decided we were going to dress up for Halloween and try to win a local costume contest (the winning team got 2k and which we all agreed we would spend that night on bad decisions after we won). Long story short we showed up too late and too drunk to the contest to win.

But a couple weeks later we decided it would be a great idea to run a 5k in costume, and in character chanting “feel the rhythm, feel the ride, get on up its bobsled time” as we ran… needless to say we are idiots, and people loved it. Here is a pic of us in mid chant that made it into the paper:

Little Victories Are Important

The old saying “winning cures everything” really is true. No matter how small the victory. Recently I was part of a small victory, and it really got me thinking about how doing well in something that is meaningful to you is so fulfilling and also something that people don’t stop to do much these days. Everyone is caught up in the routine of wake up… go to work… come home from work and try to go to the gym or make food, pass out early so you have more energy tomorrow…. often times I think the kid versions of ourselves would be super disappointed with how we spend our time… with that being said, a couple weeks ago the small victory I was a part of was that my hockey team won our leagues championship…. this is not a big deal by any stretch of the imagination… non of us are going to be pro hockey players, or even good amateur players for that matter…. but winning this, with a group of guys that I’m great friends with was such a fun feeling. Not to mention it qualified us for nationals in Toronto so we are going to get to take a big road trip up as a team and play hockey in Canada….. I think the 8 year old version of myself would be really happy about this win:

Remote Camping Trip To Boundry Waters.

Last summer I took one hell of a camping trip. Not the kind of camping trip that your thinking about, where you have a grill and you drive to a campsite, you drink some beer with your friends and hang. I’m talking about the kind of camping trip where you suffer, you have 0 access to phones/technology or the outside world…. you hike and camp in sometimes miserable conditions, and you learn a lot about yourself while doing it. What we did is we flew a bush plane into the remote wilderness and canoed/hiked our way back to civilization for 8 days…. it was fucking awesome!

Here we are leaving on the plane:

We sent out from the this general area (http://goo.gl/I7gcJr). We took a seriously old sea plane, like super sketchy 0 electronics kinda plane, here is a picture of the Dash controls:559084_10100989625130260_788841897_n

If you have never been to the Boundry waters area, it is an amazingly beautify place… full of shitty mosquitoes, bears and just about everything that makes it hard to live… and when I say full of mosquitoes I literally mean so many mosquitoes that when you go to sleep at night you hear what sounds like a train off in the distance… there are that many mosquitoes flying around they create this kind of insane constant “buzz”. But as the view from our sketchy plane can atleast, it is beautiful: 432047_10100989625180160_974988064_n

The trip was absolutely amazing. We canoed around/over waterfalls, we caught fish, we grilled our own food, we portaged canoes for miles, got more than 100 mosquitoes bites, saw wild moose, saw a bald eagle that was literally perched in a tree on the dividing line between Canada and the US… like he was guarding our border… it really was a once in a lifetime kinda trip.

The 2 “biggest” things I remember from the trip are that on day 2 our tent flooded, and I caught the biggest fish of my life. The tent flooding was both hilarious, and horrible at the same time. The horrible part was that everything we had with us, everything (our sleeping bags, our extra clothes, our shoes) everything got wet. And it never fully dried for the rest of the trip. 418442_10100989625035450_1963478222_n

The funny part was the way it happened. So the sleeping arrangements were 4 of us in one tent. Each night before we go to be we half hook up the tents rain fly, then fold it back onto the ground so its not so hot. Well its about 2:30 a.m. and I wake up first, I feel rain hitting my head…. for some unknown reason I just kind of sit there for a while kind of half asleep. I finally decide that the best course of action is to tell my buddy Doug that is raining… so I shake him for a bit and tell him its raining… by this time its starting to rain pretty hard…. he takes a few seconds… probably 30 or so… then decides that he is going to wake his brother and tell him its raining (if either one of us would have just quickly ran outside and put the tent fly on we would already be dry). For some unknown reason we don’t do that and I just wait while he tries to wake his brother… it takes a while… probably 1 or 2 mins (all the while its starting to rain harder). He finally wakes his brother, who then rolls over still half sleeping and goes “Dad it raining”…. his dad shoots up out of bed like a rocket and is out the door trying to put on the tent flap… by this time though its already too late. Its been pouring down rain for a solid 2 mins on us, all 3 of us for some reason just acted like little kids and kind of waited for his Dad to wake up before we did anything…. to this day I laugh and am puzzled by the way we acted.

The story of how I caught the fish is really one of my favorite stories ever. It is the last day of the trip, we are ~2 miles from where we are set to meet up with a park ranger and take our canoes out…. now a little back story, I am a terrible fishermen. I mean embarrassingly bad at fishing, plus I have really bad luck catching anything. So Doug goes to me and says just toss a line in the water, its our last chance to fish. So I grab my pole, my lure is tangled up and doesn’t even cast right. I throw a few cast’s and Doug looks over super disappointed in me… and says something to the effect of “come on man at least untangle the lure…” I tell him I don’t really want to so he grabs the pole and untangles the lure….. while making fun of me…. I take 1 cast, literally the very next cast and get a MONSTER bite. At first he thinks I’m joking, but then he sees the pole bending like crazy… we start whooping it up so excited because we can tell its a huge fish…. I start to battle the sucker… its smart and goes under the canoe trying to break the line… so I decide no way is that happening. I stand up (in a canoe full of 150 lbs of our shit in the middle of a lake) and reach out so I can get the line up and over the front of the boat… the fish does this 2 more times and I repeat my ill-advised stand and stretch manove (with Doug’s dad in the background yelling at me to not flip the boat and loose all of our belongings)…. with some coaching from Doug, I pull the fish up next to the boat and he nets it…. the end result is this beauty:

Parents

I had the great opportunity to spend Memorial Day weekend with my older brother, sister-in-law and my niece. They just moved into a bigger house and have a guest futon of which I took full advantage. They make parenting look good. My niece is teething and got a little bit of a fever on my second day in town. I love her so much and got nervous when she obviously wasn’t feeling well but they just did some parent things and stayed calm and don’t get frustrated when she is crying because she doesn’t feel good. As much as I love babies and kids living with them for a couple days reminded me how intense parenting is and how lucky it is that my amazing, cute, smart niece has such great parents making this life for her where she will develop and grow.

she did sit on my lap to read books and we built blocks, which I swear she was counting even though she’s only One.

Laughing so hard you cry

So its been a while since I can remember laughing so hard that I was actually crying, and it happened to me twice yesterday so I thought I would write both situations down so I could come back and reflect on them when future me was having a bad day. The first time was solely related to a work project, my business partner and I have been working extremely hard on a project and we made such an egregious error that we just stated laughing…. it was late at night, probably 1:30 so we were fully into our “power band” as I commonly refer to the time between 12:00 – 2:00 a.m. Anytime I am up working past 12:30 a.m. there really just seems to be a certain magic in the air…. I’ve talked in more detail about this in a prior post.

Anyway everyone knows what I’m talking about, your with one of your best friends and one of you just starts laughing. And you start feeding off of it, realizing how funny the situation is and the next thing you know your both just laughing hysterically and cant stop… the kind of laughing where you feel like you are going to run out of air… the kind of laughing it seems most people only do when they are little kids.

The second situation was that I got this link sent to me by a colleague: http://i.imgur.com/ZaR586t.gif. He was referencing the fact that another member of the staff initially worked as a cart pusher and was making fun of him saying this is probably how he unloaded carts… without missing a beat the guy replied “talk about an efficient way of getting carts off a truck”. For some reason this was absolutely hilarious too me, just knowing how my friends mind works, and how he would actually look at that image and think “oh very efficient way to get carts off a truck” was too much for me…..

Anyway internet, I hope you are able to laugh until you cry sometime soon.
